The Domino Scoop

Summer Time and Soul Music

5/17/10

Warm weather and sunshine. Add some Soul music and you've got yourself a first-class day.

That's why we're more than ready for all the great summer events coming up for Domino this year. We're excited to be part of two completely new concert series this year: "AFTER 5 JIVE at Smith Mountain Lake" on June 3; and the Town of Christiansburg's new SUMMER CONCERT SERIES on June 25. We have lots of friends at Smith Mountain Lake from our performances at the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival and in Christiansburg as well.

Of course, we're thrilled to have been invited back again to the wonderful "BB&T's PARTY IN THE PARK" in downtown Roanoke again this year. We're honored to be part of the series and are looking forward to a great evening in Elmwood Park on July 1. On top of that, it's BOTH Ladies Night AND "Barefoot in the Park" Wine Tasting Night! Pinch us... we must be dreaming! :)

On a more serious note, the good folks of Martinsville and Henry County Virginia have suffered even more job losses this year with the recent closing of American of Martinsville and the major layoffs at Stanley Furniture. In spite of the hardship, the people of Henry County rallied together and still raised enough money to put on the annual Celebration event. This is a fabulous FREE event put on for the residents of Martinsville and Henry County. The event always includes rides for the children, food, and a top notch concert with a major headliner and usually draws 40,000 to 45,000 people. We are so honored to have been invited back for our SEVENTH appearance at CELEBRATION 2010 at the Martinsville Speedway opening for DELBERT McCLINTON. In fact, we're told that Domino is the only band to have played Celebration more than once.

Later in the summer, we'll be back at "SALEM AFTER FIVE" (a great family event!) at the Farmer's Market on Main Street in Salem, VA and at "RADFORD AFTER FIVE" in Radford, VA.

We're looking forward to seeing lots of old friends and making some new ones, so please come on out to the shows and make sure to stop by and say 'hi'. Warm weather, sunshine, and soul music. Just doesn't get any better than that.

Still Funky After All These Years...

10/16/09

Ok, let's get this on the table right now. It's been a little while... er... a long while since we posted an update here. What can we say? We've been busy!

Seriously, we've been a little lax in updating our news here, and we're sorry about that. Domino has been busy cranking out the soul music at every opportunity as always and we're looking forward to our upcoming winter performances. We hope to see many of you there!

Domino will be working hard on our next CD release this winter and hope to have it ready for release by next summer. Check back here for more updates soon.

We also have a big news item in case you hadn't heard. Domino's good friend, the legendary MIC GILLETTE, has rejoined TOWER OF POWER as lead trumpet once again after a 25-year absence. If you EVER get the chance, you owe it to yourself to catch Tower of Power live!

We hope to see you at a Domino show soon! Come up and say 'hi'...

Summer Shows and SPECIAL GUESTS!

5/11/07

Domino is looking forward to another great summer lineup of events, starting with Party in the Park at Roanoke's Elmwood Park on Thursday, June 28 with some fabulous guest musicians!

Domino will once again be joined by the legendary MIC GILLETTE (Tower of Power, Santana, Doobie Brothers) on trumpet and trombone.

This year, another good friend, the fabulous JON SMITH (Edgar Winter's White Trash, Toto), will be joining Domino as well on tenor sax.

For the icing on the cake, crowd favorite ROBERT "BONGO" HERRERA all the way from Costa Rica is once again joining us on percussion!

As long-time Domino fans know, Mic Gillette is the original lead trumpet for the legendary Tower of Power, and has recorded and performed with hundreds of the top names in the music business.

From New Orleans, Jon Smith is known throughout the music industry for his soulful saxophone work. Jon gained his reputation with Edgar Winter's White Trash and went on to play with Toto, Albert Collins, Dr. John, Boz Scaggs, and more.

Domino will take the stage with our illustrious guests at Roanoke's Party In the Park in downtown Elmwood Park. Presented by the Event Zone, Party in the Park is Roanoke's premiere concert series. Domino lights up the stage from 6:00 to 8:30. Come join us!

On Tuesday, July 3, Domino will once again perform at Martinsville's Celebration 2007 at the Martinsville Speedway with Mic, Jon and Bongo, opening for country superstars Diamond Rio. This is a terrific FREE event provided by the City of Martinsville, Henry County, the Martinsville Speedway, and many generous sponsors in the Martinsville area.

In the past, Domino has opened Celebration for Tracy Byrd, Trace Atkins, and Trick Pony, and Blake Shelton with up to an estimated 42,000 people at this event, and this year promises to be no different. If you live anywhere close (or even if you dont!), come on out for a great evening of music and the most spectacular fireworks just about anywhere!

East Bay Soul Music

10/13/06

Everyone that knows Domino knows our respect for the legendary Oakland, California soul band, Tower of Power.

Our good friend Mic Gillette was the original lead trumpet for Tower of Power (TOP). Tower continues to tour and light up stages worldwide with their brand of horn-oriented East Bay Soul and funk.

Domino's guitarist and band manager, Steve Finch, has been asked by Stephen 'Doc' Kupka of Tower of Power to manage the business affairs for his private record label, Strokeland Records.

Steve is honored and excited to be running this independent label for Doc and a collection of other fabulous musicians, including Bruce Conte, Roger Smith, DoctorfunK, Mingo Fishtrap, Larry Braggs, and many more.

If you enjoy Domino, please also check out our friends at Strokeland Records and tell 'em Domino sent ya!

Stephen Kupka, the "Funky Doctor", wrote or co-wrote most of Tower of Power's classic songs and has performed and recorded with the very biggest names in music. Expect some exciting new things to come with this close association between Domino and a true musical legend.

Wine Festival

10/10/06

Thanks to everyone that came out to the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival on September 23 to support Domino!

This was our fourth year playing on Saturday afternoon at this great event. The crowd grows larger every year and the event sponsors told us that they estimated around 6,000 were in attendance this year for Domino's show and the great wine vendors.

Make plans now to come out to Bernard's Landing at Smith Mountain Lake next September to enjoy a great fall afternoon with some Classic Soul music from Domino.

Thanks to everyone for a GREAT week!

7/8/06

Well, it started when our good friends, Mic Gillette and "Bongo Bob" Hererra rolled into town on June 28.  Roanoke hasn't been the same since.  But we mean that in a good way. LOL

Our week started out with an appearance at Roanoke's Party in the Park on Thursday, June 29. (See photos!)  It was a great summer evening for an outside show and we made it with no rain this year!  Thanks to the Event Zone, WDBJ7, Roanoke's BOB-FM and all the sponsors for a great event.  We really appreciate the support we always get when we play outside in Roanoke.

After our one day off on Friday, Domino headed on Saturday to Hidden Valley Country Club where we had another great evening. Thanks to all the friendly folks at Hidden Valley CC for the warm reception.  On Sunday, we hit the road to Beckley, WV for a class reunion and had a lot of laughs and great music.

On Monday, our week culminated with another BIG show at the Martinsville Speedway for Celebration 2006 with Mic and Bongo, opening for country superstar Blake Shelton
(See photos!)

We always love performing for our friends in Martinsville and this year was no exception.  Our good friend, Josh Shilling, from The Embers came and shared lead vocal duties with Domino's Tony Conner on Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On".  I think everyone present was inspired by the vocal talents of these two great singers.

Mic Gillette gave his usual high-energy performances all week.  From the first note to the last, Mic gives 100% and the horn section was smoking as a result.  At Martinsville, Mic was asked to play the National Anthem on solo trumpet and he absolutely nailed the performance.  The roar of approval from 40,000 people when Mic ended with a screaming note while holding his fist high in the air is amazing to hear from stage.

Our friend, "Bongo Bob" Herrera from Costa Rica added a lot to our shows with his great percussion work. "Bongo" has worked with George Benson, Heart and others and has been involved in just about every aspect of the music business.  We laughed a lot this week and a lot of that is Bongo's fault!

Kent Martin and SRO Productions provided the killer sound system and production services they're known for and Martinsville showed up in force, with an estimated 40,000+ folks in attendance.  Thanks again to the Martinsville Speedway, the City of Martinsville, and all the sponsors for having us back for the FOURTH year!  We understand that Domino is the only band to be invited back to Celebration and we take that as a great honor.

Looking Forward to Summer!

5/19/06

Domino is looking forward to another great summer lineup of events, starting with Party in the Park at Roanoke's Elmwood Park on Thursday, June 29.

Domino will once again be joined by our dear friend, the one and only Mic Gillette on trumpet and this year, Robert "Bongo" Herrera from Costa Rica on percussion.

As long-time Domino fans know, Mic Gillette is the original lead trumpet for the legendary Tower of Power, and has recorded and performed with hundreds of the top names in the music business.

Celebration 2003 from Backstage

Thank you so much to all the wonderful folks that supported and came out to the show, especially Brown Burton, WDBJ7, BobFM, Kent Martin and Ken Carey of SRO Productions, Dylan Locke of DLP Productions, Joe Kennedy, and Tad Dickens. A Great Week

7/6/05

Party in the Park, June 30

We'd like to thank everyone who came out to the Party in the Park last Thursday, June 30, in Elmwood Park. Unfortunately, right as the time for sound check approached, the sky darkened and then let loose with a patented Virginia thunderstorm.

We got quite a bit of water, but the rain didn't last too long. Thankfully, we also had enough warning to get all the equipment covered and protected before the storm arrived. Eventually the sun came back out and the show went on!

The crowd was great and very appreciative. Our good friend Mic Gillette was in town for the week's performances and local favorite Barry Tucker rounded out the horn section on trombone. Whenever Mic is in town, you can count on the energy level going up about three notches.

We want to thank The Event Zone and Party in the Park sincerely for inviting Domino this year. Our thanks also to Dylan Locke and the staff and volunteers of the wonderful Jefferson Center for their support of the event that evening.

Celebration 2005, Martinsville Speedway, July 1

On Friday, July 1, Domino was scheduled to open for country stars Trick Pony at Martinsville, Virginia's Celebration 2005. This is a wonderful event held each year at the Martinsville Speedway. The City of Martinsville and a number of corporations in the area provide this incredible event for FREE as a thank-you to the citizens of Martinsville and Henry County.

Once again, we were all set up on stage. This time, the National Weather Service called the Speedway to warn us that a major storm with 75mph winds and large hail was headed our way.

The storm hit with a fury. Several times, the clouds above the Speedway started spinning and looking for all the world as if a tornado was beginning. Luckily, it never did, but the talented people from SRO Productions, the audio and light production company for the evening sustained quite a bit of damage as water collected several feet deep where all 16 subwoofer cabinets were placed.

Mic Gillette plays the National Anthem

With a superhuman effort, SRO Productions pulled the evening off and got Trick Pony on stage. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time left for two acts, so Domino never made it on stage. Oh, well... maybe next year.

At least ONE of us did get to perform. Mic Gillette gave a thrilling solo trumpet performance of the National Anthem and ended it to an incredible roar from the crowd. It also turns out that Heidi Newfield, lead singer for Trick Pony, is a huge fan of Mic's work with Tower of Power. After the anthem, she came over and said "YOU'RE MIC GILLETTE??!" See the picture here of Mic in action, courtesy of Shannon Sampson.

The next night, Domino played a private party with Mic. At least, that gig stayed DRY!

Best Wishes

2/5/05

Our good friend and tenor saxophonist, Dave Waltz, has decided to take some time to pursue other interests and travel with his family.    We wish Dave all the best in everything he does.    Dave will more than likely show up from time to time sitting in with Domino and will still be pursuing his musical interests.

What a Week!

7/6/04

Domino had the kind of week that musicians live for from June 30 through July 5!! It started on Wednesday, June 30 when members of Domino performed with Mic Gillette's own band, "The Funky Loophole" at Paradox in downtown Roanoke. That was a slamming night of music as anyone in attendance will tell you!

The next night, July 1, Domino hit the stage for the Easter Seals Concert Series in Elmwood Park. The crowd was fantastic and very appreciative. Mic Gillette and special guests, Barry Tucker on trombone and Leonard Stewart on percussion helped make sure the energy level was high all night.   We want to thank Easter Seals and the concert committee sincerely for inviting Domino back again this year. What a blast!

On Friday, July 2, Domino opened for none other than country superstar Trace Adkins at Martinsville, Virginia's Celebration 2005. This is a wonderful event held each year at the Martinsville Speedway. The City of Martinsville and a number of corporations in the area provide this incredible event for FREE as a thank-you to the citizens of Martinsville and Henry County.

Get this... there were an estimated 42,000+ people in attendance! Domino ripped through a set of classic R&B and soul to get the crowd pumped up for Trace Adkins. Prior to Trace Adkin's set, Mic Gillette gave a beautiful solo trumpet performance of the National Anthem and ended it to an incredible roar of approval from the 42,000 attendees with his fist raised in the air. What a moment!

Trace Adkins had the crowd in the palm of his hand and the energy hit an even higher level when Trace invited Mic and the Domino Horns on stage with him for his version of the classic song "634-5789". Mic, Elmer Coles, and Dave Waltz did a phenomenal job and Trace and his band obviously enjoyed it as much as the crowd. The night ended with one of the best fireworks displays ANYWHERE.

The next night, Domino played a private party with Mic. Ok... it was a little of a shock to be playing for 150 people or so after THIS week. Finally, on July 4, Mic and Elmer played at the Homestead backing Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, The Impressions.

Sleep was then the order of the day.   But we'll be ready for next year!   We hope to have some photos posted soon!

Mic Gillette Appearing with Domino at Celebration 2004

6/21/04

Domino will be again be appearing at Martinsville, Virginia's fabulous Celebration 2004 concert at the Martinsville Speedway with concert headliner Trace Adkins on July 2nd. Domino had the privilege of opening for Tracy Byrd last year at Celebration 2003 with an estimated attendance of 36,000.

This year's concert should be another great show, with a similar attendance.

We are thrilled that our good friend, Mic Gillette, will again be joining Domino on stage! Mic played the National Anthem for the show last year and is expected to do so again this year.

It promises to be a great evening of music and fun. If you're in the Martinsville, Virginia area, come out and join Domino and Trace Adkins on July 2nd! It's a FREE SHOW presented as a way for the local government and industry to say 'Thank You' to the citizens of Henry County.

Patti Nuckols Fallon

10/21/03

Our dear friend and alto saxophonist, Patti Fallon, finally ended her remarkable battle with cancer on Wednesday, October 8, 2003. Patti's struggle was one of incredible determination and will power that has inspired all of us and many, many people far and wide.

Patti will always have her spot in the Domino horn section in our hearts.

Thank you to everyone who encouraged Patti in her struggle and who will remember her always.

Tower of Power in Roanoke!!

8/29/03

If you didn't already know, our inspirations, the legendary TOWER OF POWER will be performing at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium on Tuesday, October 21, 2003!! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for western Virginia music fans to catch possibly the best horn band in the world.

Don't take our word for it. Tower of Power has released almost two dozen albums over the last thirty-five years and the Tower of Power horns have recorded and performed with just about all the biggest names in the music business, including the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Huey Lewis & the News, Little Feat, and hundreds more.

We're especially proud that our good friend, Mic Gillette, is a founding member of Tower of Power and spent twenty years as section leader, lead trumpet, and trombonist of the mightiest horn section of them all.

The concert is a benefit fund-raiser for the Downtown Music Lab.

If you know Tower of Power, you're probably already on the phone to reserve tickets. If you're not familiar with their music, you owe it to yourself to see the explosively high energy of this band. The legendary Tower of Power horns and the tightest rhythm section anywhere will be laying down the Oakland-style funk, served extra greasy.

Please support this event by coming out for this concert so that this can happen again in our area. Support a worthy cause and experience a legendary concert.

We can promise you won't be disappointed. It's a show you'll never forget.

Tickets may be purchased at the Roanoke Civic Center box office or online at www.tickets.com.

Easter Seals Concert

8/29/03

Whew! The rain held off and the party was cookin' at the Easter Seals concert at Roanoke's Elmwood Park on August 28. The Domino horns were joined by our "West Coast member" and inspiration, the one and only Mic Gillette on trumpet and trombone, and also by our good friend Mr. Barry Tucker on trombone. What a horn section. We just wish our alto saxophonist, Patti Fallon, could have been with us.

Our thanks to Easter Seals and especially Mr. Brown Burton for making this show happen. We look forward to doing it again next year!

We Love You, Patti.

8/6/03

As many of you know, our dear friend and alto saxophonist, Patti Fallon, has been battling cancer for over five years and has triumphed with a remarkable spirit and determination.

Patti is in the hospital right now, with severe pain and medical complications. Please keep her in your prayers.

Mic Gillette Appearing with Domino on August 28th

8/5/03

Domino will be appearing at Roanoke's Easter Seals Concert Series at Elmwood Park on August 28th from 6:00 to 8:30pm. Arrangements have just been completed for our good friend, Mic Gillette to join Domino on trumpet and trombone for the show!

If you haven't had the opportunity to hear Mic play, you won't want to miss this show. Mic is a legend among horn players, and it's easy to see why.

Thanks, Martinsville!

What a blast!! If you were at the Martinsville Speedway on July 3rd, you know what we're talking about. With an estimated 35,000 people in attendance, this was some party!

Domino opened for Tracy Byrd at Celebration 2003, a wonderful annual civic event for the people of Martinsville and Henry County. Our good friend and musical mentor, Mic Gillette, flew in from California to join Domino for the event. Mic played a smoking rendition of the National Anthem on solo trumpet to kick off the event and kept the Domino horns kicking.

Our dear friend and smoking alto saxophonist, Patti Fallon, was unable to be at the show due to illness, but she was there in spirit. We missed you, Patti! Get well soon.

Domino would like to sincerely thank Mike Smith and the Martinsville Speedway, the City of Martinsville and Henry County, and all the other sponsors of Celebration 2003 for such a wonderful reception. This event is provided free of charge to the public by these sponsors as a public service. In these tough economic times, it truly speaks to the character of the people of Southside Virginia.

Our thanks also to Tracy Byrd and his band and crew. You guys are the best! We've never worked with a friendlier, more professional and cooperative group of musicians and engineers. Tracy and his band put on a great show for a very appreciative crowd.

After a rather eventful start, the concert came off flawlessly. The main sound equipment truck owned by our good friends at SRO Productions (the producers of the show and Domino's exclusive management agency), had flipped over and slid down a bank beside the highway on the way to the show! Thanks to a superhuman effort by the crew at SRO, all of the gear was hauled by hand up a 25 foot bank and loaded into a rented truck. Unbelievable as it may seem, the show went off on time.

One of the largest and most incredible fireworks displays anywhere capped off a great evening.

We hope to be able to post more pictures soon. Check back often!

Remember also that Domino will also be at Roanoke's First Friday's on Friday, May 16th.

Domino In Concert With The Impressions on Feb 15!

2/4/03

Domino recently opened for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, The Impressions at a concert in Beckley, WV.  The Domino Horns also backed The Impressions for their show.

Some bands stand out over the years as classic performers, and certainly The Impressions are one of those bands. Known for their smooth R&B sounds on a number of hits, including "People Get Ready", "It's Alright", "Gypsy Woman", and for their lengendary association with the late, great Curtis Mayfield, The Impressions have stood the test of time.

The concert was sponsored by our friends at Groovy 94.1, and was held at the beautiful Woodrow Wilson Auditorium in Beckley, WV on Saturday, Feb 15, 2003.

Domino was honored to perform with The Impressions.

A FUNKY NEW YEAR

12/27/02

Domino laid down the R&B and Funk on New Year's Eve at Corned Beef & Company in Roanoke, Va. It had been a number of years since Domino has had a New Year's performance that was open to the public.

We had a slammin' evening with the Domino horns set for stun.  Our friend, the legendary Mic Gillette joined us for this gig.  Domino hit the stage that night with a FOUR piece horn section!  We didn't think it was possible, but Mic took it up a level that night and absolutely amazed the audience and the band!
